Why is insulation important for your home and why use MykoFoam?

Insulating your home you increase indoor comfort in both warmer or colder climates, improving energy efficiency and saving on monthly costs.

Portugal is listed as the fifth European country suffering from energy poverty, with 19% of the population in energy poverty, meaning an inability to pay heating or cooling bills. In winter this worsens reaching a higher mortality rate than other European countries due to poor insulation. Portugal allocated 38% of its total funds towards climate objectives, including the Sustainable Buildings Program (SBP) which includes many initiatives such as renovating central government buildings.

Insulating homes is the most efficient solution to tackling energy poverty. This can be done in both retrofitting older buildings and increasing insulation in new builds. Using insulation also improves the housing conditions and health issues, can help prevent mould and humidity. With this in mind, the Portuguese government created a Strategy to Fight Energy Poverty in Portugal by 2050 (ELPPE) through proper insulating buildings and decarbonising the industry.

It is not enough to just use insulation, carbon negative insulation is a must due to the high amount of energy required to manufacture conventional insulation, in other words embodied carbon.

With this in mind, we created MykoFoam, a thermal and acoustic insulation panel made from industrial residues, mycelium and powered by biotech. It is highly breathable, easy to install, affordable, fire resistant and with MykoFoam we tackle 31% of carbon emissions.
